NDR broadcast this in September 09. It is worth watching even if you can’t understand the language. There is a lot showing general concern about issues such as mercury content, recycling and effectiveness (or lack of!) of “energy saving” CFLs

An influential group of artists recently published the following statement in the Neue Westfalische newspaper in Germany. Thanks to PLD Magazine for translating this and sending it to me.

No such thing as a free Lightbulb!
OK so there is a bit of exaggeration as the money has been spent on other things as well as CFLi give-aways. Some is spent on the very heavily discounted lamps still being sold in DIY superstores and Supermarkets, EON are even getting their name printed on the boxes by Philips!
So you could say that we are now being forced to pay for something we don’t want and is not working to create the energy savings promised!

Light and Building, Frankfurt 2010
Well here we are again pretty much everyone with commercial interests in lighting is in Frankfurt attending the mother of all lighting exhibitions. Given we are now 7 months into the first stage of the ban on incandescent lamps it is simply stunning how many products particularly in the decorative and domestic sectors are still designed for and exhibited with traditional incandescent lamps.
So far I have yet to see anything new in incandescent replacements though i have not yet made it around the entire exhibition, and am unlikely to do so given constraints on time. Sad to report that Osram are still claiming an 11W CFLis equal to a 60W incandescent despite the judgment in Iceland posted previously.
I will let you know if anything interesting surfaces tomorrow.

Is EMF from CFLi going to cause human health issues?
Doyen of Lighting Designers Howard Brandston has spent the early part of this year beavering away in his garage undertaking some fundamental research into another area of concern around the Compact Fluorescent ballast Integrated “Energy Saver” lamps. His focus is on the Electro Magnetic Field (EMF) created by these. He has gained initial funding from the IESNA and has prepared a discussion paper identifying issues that require further urgent investigation. Continue Reading → -
Open letter from the Institte of Building Biology and Ecology, Neubeuern
Here is a letter sent to the politicians in Europe from IBN trying to raise awareness of the negative issues of CFLi. The legislation has taken place in such haste that these issues have not been properly addressed, let;s hope this will assist in opening up the discussion at a senior political level. CFLi can’t be described as “Environmentally Friendly”
Following nearly a years work by Kristján Gunnar Kristjánsson <kristjan@lumex.is> the Icelandic consumer authority have banned Osram from claiming that CFLi are environmentally friendly and that an 11W CFLi is equal to a 60W incandescent lamp. The decision was handed down yesterday and as soon as it is translated I will be posting it on here. Now, who is going to make a similar complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK?
Here is a translation of the decision, the full text is available as a PDF in the downloads page:

All quiet on the Lightbulb front
There has been very little to report in the last few months. The EuP process has not managed to get anywhere with the reflector lamps legislation apart from delaying dates for publication of draft legislation yet again. I all fairness the report that they received from VITO was pretty hopeless and they have chosen to lump domestic light fittings into the topic and there just is no way of realistically determining the efficiency of a lampshade!
I have been trying to figure out how to post one of my talks on here but am en-mired in technical problems not the least of which is trying to film one of my lectures, the last attempt failed because of poor sound quality.
One interesting paper that has be produced and will find its way onto the site soon is an MSc Thesis by Halldor Steinsen fro Iceland who has undertaken a detailed study of the impact of the proposed ban on incandescent lamps in Iceland and substantially proves that a change to CFLi will produce a net increase in CO2 emissions attributable to the change over rather than savings ! i am working with Halldor to provide an edited version of the paper for publication here and elsewhere.
